, washington hasn't made much progress to avoid it. that was the assessment from one of those directly involved: house speaker john boehner. the top republican today accused president obama of, "slow walking", the economy to the edge of the cliff. he repeated his call for the president to send congress a plan that can pass both houses of congress. tax rates are the major sticking point. the president wants to raise them for america's highest earners, house republicans strongly oppose: >> instead of reforming the tax code and cutting spending, the president wants to raise tax rates. but even if the president got the tax rate hike that he wanted, understand that we would continue to see trillion dollar deficits for as far as the eye can see. washington's got a spending problem, not a revenue problem. >> tom: congress and the president have 24 days to reach a deal, before the fiscal cliff's tax hikes and spending cuts take effect. >> susie: mark zandi says "bad things will happen to the economy pretty fast" if lawmakers don't settle the fiscal cliff issue. he's chief economist of moody's analytics

executives in washington, president obama said republicans' aid to examine the reality that tax rates will rise for the wealthiest americans. >> we have seen some movement in the last several days with some republicans. there has been a recognition that, maybe, they can accept some rate increases as long as is combined with a serious impediment reform and additional spending cuts. and if we can get the leadership on the republican side to take that kramer, to acknowledge that reality, then the numbers are actually not that far apart. another way of putting this is, we could probably solve this in about one week. it is not that tough. >> new details have been revealed in the retail giant kermit factory where 120 dacre workers died in a fire last month. "the new york times" is reporting that wal-mart played a key role in blocking the improvement of safety features at the bangladeshi factory. one representative helped quash a proposal that would help to improve safety investments, calling them not financially feasible. documents found at the fire scene also show five of the factory's 14

rushing back to washington where storm clouds are gathering over the capital. the top democrat in the senate, accusing the republican speaker of the house of running a dictatorship. they say they haven't given up, but it sounds that way. >> i don't know time wise how it can happen now. >> here we are, once again, at the end of the year, staring at a crisis we should have dealt with literally months ago. >> reporter: without an agreement soon, nearly everybody takes a hit. a schoolteacher with two kids and a salary of $43,000, for example, will face a tax hike of more than $3,000. members of congress helped get us in this mess and they'll pay, too. with incomes of $174,000, they'll pay some $7,500 more in taxes. and it's not just taxes. on january 1, unemployment benefits expire for some 2 million people. you can expect one last effort, including a meeting at the white house with congressional leaders to try to prevent the fiscal cliff from happening. but with just four days left until everybody's taxes go up, there's not a lot of optimism that it can be cone in time. jonathan k

$109. thankfully her main street, washington street did not flood and is again open for business. hundreds of businesses located off her main street were severely flooded. even businesses that did not flood have been severely impacted by one of our principal means of transportation to new york, the past train was flooded has not been restored. many businesses reported 60% reduction in business due to the difficulty of getting to and from hoboken. some businesses that flooded remains closed or for us to operate an alternate location as they try to navigate the insurance, it. i call an assurance: because the flood insurance program is not designed to meet the needs of the urban environment. i believe there's a fundamental unfairness of the system are respectfully asked congress to try to address. when businesses located in a flood zone by properties come in the first to purchase flood insurance by mortgage companies. but the program tree skirt instead of businesses as if they were basements. if they rent, which many businesses do, the direct uninsured costs are often passed on to

for me to sort of navigate the ways of this chamber, the ways of washington, the ways of congress, something that i think everybody knows is a challenge, whether you've been in the state legislature or any kind of legislative body prior to coming to the congress, it is a challenge to get to know how to operate in this environment. leonard has been very, very good to me, and i appreciate everything he has done. i could talk about his military service and all these other things that congressman latham just mentioned, but i'm not going to do that except say i am on armed services. i never served in the military myself. i have two marine children with whom we're going to be spending christmas again this year no matter what the congress decides to do and no matter what the president and speaker boehner decide to do, we're with them, to honor them and our military this christmas. leonard has a distinguished past in the military. there's absolutely no doubt about that. one other thing i'll say about leonard boswell, we talked a lot about us being from iowa. but i refer to leonard boswell
